Conveyancer (4+ PQE)

Salary: Competitive salary based on experience | Location: Hybrid working

Take ownership of your matters

Good conveyancing is about more than getting a transaction to completion. It is about keeping control of the detail, anticipating issues early and making the process as clear as possible for the client.

KaurMaxwell is a growing boutique law firm, and we are looking for an experienced Conveyancer to play an important role in our Property team.

You will run your own caseload of residential property transactions from instruction through to completion and post-completion, with real ownership of your files, your client relationships and your development.

We are looking for someone who combines strong technical ability with good judgement, organisation and client care, and who wants to contribute to the continued growth of the department.

The role

You will manage a varied caseload of residential and commericial property matters and take responsibility for progressing each transaction efficiently, accurately and commercially.

Your work will include sales and purchases, portfolio remortgages and restructuring, transfers of equity and new-build matters across freehold, leasehold, registered and unregistered title.

You will work with clients, estate agents, lenders, solicitors, conveyancers and other third parties, keeping matters moving while maintaining the standards expected across KaurMaxwell.

This is a fee-earning role for someone who is comfortable managing their own caseload with minimal supervision and understands the importance of both excellent legal work and a strong client experience.

What you'll do

Run your own caseload

  • You will take responsibility for residential and commericial property transactions from instruction through to completion and post-completion.
  • That will include reviewing and reporting on title, raising and responding to enquiries, reviewing searches, contracts and property information forms, and drafting and approving contracts, transfers and other legal documents.
  • You will manage exchange and completion, including completion statements and the secure handling of client money, and ensure SDLT returns and Land Registry applications are completed accurately and on time.
  • Your files should be well organised, properly documented and progressed proactively. You will manage a high volume of matters while balancing transaction deadlines and competing priorities.

Be the person your clients rely on

  • Property transactions can be unfamiliar and stressful for clients. Clear communication matters.
  • You will take instructions, understand what the client is trying to achieve and keep them informed throughout the transaction in clear, straightforward language.
  • You will manage expectations around timescales, costs and risk from the outset and deal professionally with clients, estate agents, lenders, other lawyers and third parties. The aim is to build trusted relationships rather than simply process transactions.
  • You will also understand the client's wider needs and identify where colleagues elsewhere at KaurMaxwell may be able to assist, including with Wills, probate and family matters.

Keep control of the detail

  • Strong conveyancing depends on accuracy and good judgement.
  • You will investigate documents and transaction history carefully, identify issues at an early stage and make sure advice and procedures are accurate.
  • You will complete file opening requirements in full, including client identification, source of funds checks and risk assessments, and ensure post-completion work is dealt with properly before files are closed and archived.
  • You will also participate in quarterly file reviews and use feedback to maintain and improve the quality of your work.

Understand the commercial side of the role

  • This is a fee-earning position, so you will have responsibility for the commercial performance of your caseload as well as the legal work itself.
  • You will work towards agreed fee contribution and time targets, manage matters efficiently and understand the relationship between fees generated, costs and profitability.
  • You will maintain a clear understanding of WIP and disbursements, issue accurate and timely bills and support the Head of Department with credit control where required.
  • Good legal work, client service and commercial awareness should work together.

Build relationships and help grow the practice

  • You will play an active role in developing the Property department.
  • That means building strong relationships with existing clients and referrers while developing new connections with estate agents, mortgage brokers, developers and other professional contacts.
  • You will contribute to business development and marketing activity, help identify new opportunities and work to develop a strong and loyal client base over time.
  • You will also act as a positive KaurMaxwell ambassador at internal and external events.

Uphold the standard

  • You will maintain high professional and regulatory standards across every matter you handle.
  • That includes complying with relevant SRA and CLC requirements, KYC and anti-money laundering obligations, internal policies and procedures, and The KM Way.
  • You will identify, monitor and address risks including title issues, mortgage fraud, sanctions and money laundering concerns, escalating issues to the Head of Department or compliance team where appropriate.
  • Client and firm information must be treated as strictly confidential at all times.

Use technology well

  • We want technology to support better legal work and a better client experience.
  • You will make full use of the firm's case management system, e-signature tools, ID verification systems and Land Registry portals.
  • You will also be encouraged to suggest improvements to processes, precedents and working practices where they can improve efficiency, quality or the client experience.

Keep developing

  • You will take responsibility for your own professional development and career progression.
  • That includes participating positively in one-to-one and goal-setting meetings, attending internal and external training and keeping your technical knowledge current.
  • You will also contribute to team meetings, departmental initiatives and wider firm objectives, including the firm's B Corp and Lexcel commitments.

Who you are

You are an experienced conveyancer who is comfortable taking responsibility for your own matters and wants to work in a firm where quality, client service and commercial awareness are equally important.

You will ideally bring:

  • Qualification as a Licensed Conveyancer through the CLC
  • Around 4+ years' post-qualification experience
  • Extensive experience in residential conveyancing
  • A proven track record of managing your own residential property caseload from instruction through to completion
  • Strong technical knowledge of residential property law and practice
  • Good working knowledge of SDLT, Land Registry practice and lender requirements
  • Sound knowledge of applicable SRA and CLC requirements, AML, client due diligence and source of funds checks
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly when reviewing title, documentation and financial information
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to remain calm and organised when working to transaction deadlines
  • Confidence using case management systems and legal technology
  • A proactive and commercially aware approach to legal practice
  • Accountability, integrity and a collaborative approach
  • The ability to work effectively both remotely and in the office when required
  • The right to work in the UK

What you'll get

  • A competitive salary based on your experience
  • Performance-based bonuses and incentives
  • A clear career progression pathway
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Professional development and training
  • Ownership of your own caseload and client relationships
  • The opportunity to contribute to the development of the Property department
  • A role within a growing boutique firm where your contribution can make a visible difference
